Frequenty Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What exactly is Executive Coaching?

In my view, executive coaching is about facilitating a positive shift in the journey of a senior leader by being a trusted sounding board.  — An Executive coach asks powerful questions and gently challenge the those belief systems that may not be serving them.

A good coach asks far more questions than they give answers, because the truth is — leaders often already have the answers within them. They need somebody who could ask the right questions.

Mentoring is all about sharing expertise and providing guidance, consulting is about providing expert advice, but executive coaching is all about helping leaders improve the quality of their thinking. It helps leaders stay focused on solutions instead of problems.

In essence, executive coaching supports CEOs and CXOs rediscover the greatness that already exists within them — so they can move toward their goals with greater clarity, conviction, and speed.

2. What is the right time for a CEO or senior leader to engage with a coach?

The majority of leaders look for an executive coach when they’re stepping into a larger role or experiencing any challenges. But ideally — the right time is when they are genuinely keen to learn and grow.

It could be when you intend to be an improved version of yourself.
or may be when you want to leave a legacy by doing something truly remarkable.
or when you’re aiming for outstanding success,

or maybe simply invested in self-mastery.

It could also be when certain things aren’t working well in your life, or when you need a trusted sounding board to gain clarity in thinking.

In short, the right time to engage a coach is when you’re ready — ready to reflect, challenge yourself, and step into your next level of effectiveness and impact.

3. What kind of outcomes can I expect from executive coaching?

The outcomes of coaching go far beyond achieving goals — they reflect  in how you think, communicate, and lead.

Majority of leaders who go through this coaching experience:

  • Greater clarity and improved decision-making
  • Powerful executive presence and enhanced gravitas, in the boardroom
  • Improved trust with the stakeholders and stronger long term relationships
  • Improved composure under pressure
  • Many tangible business outcomes and visible behavior shifts

Essentially, coaching aids you to achieve self-mastery- the complete power to control your own thoughts, feelings, actions, and desire. As a result, you start responding rather than reacting. It also aids you lead with confidence, balance, and purpose.

Many leaders are enriched by Executive coaching as they evidently witness an improvement in their communication and influence. It also aids you to a greater extent to create a significant impact on your stakeholders and inspire confidence in others.

Eventually, it aids you to shift from technical brilliance to boardroom brilliance, making your presence evident in the boardroom.

4. How long does a coaching engagement usually last?

Usually, executive coaching engagements that I conduct last for six to eight months. This duration facilitates sustainable behavioral shifts leading to the clients meeting or exceeding their set goals. Sessions are typically 90 minutes each, held once or twice a month.
Between two sessions, there is a considerable reflection and action — that’s where most transformation happens.

5. How do I know if coaching is right for me?

If you’re someone who is invested in self-development and someone who constantly aspires for improvement and growth, coaching is right for you.

Coaching is for leaders who want to leave a lasting legacy as a result of their outstanding contributions and impact.  Such leaders aspire to leave a legacy not just in their professional life, but also in how they lead their lives holistically

And most importantly, it’s for those who are ready to put in the effort towards self-growth and self-mastery.

6. What’s the difference between Executive Coaching and Executive Presence Coaching?

Executive Coaching is a learning journey that a senior executive, such as a  CEO and CXO, takes along with a certified Executive Coach. This journey is a reflective and result-focused partnership where a coach acts as a sounding board, asks powerful questions to facilitate transformative progress

The focus of the coaching is mutually agreed upon through a powerful reflective goal-setting process. It could be either enhancing leadership effectiveness, decision-making, stakeholder relationships, or self-mastery.

Executive Presence Coaching, on the other hand, is fully focused on supporting leaders enhance their overall executive presence. It’s often a blend of mentoring and coaching.

It involves identifying and further strengthening areas where you already demonstrate good executive presence. Also working on those areas where the executive presence is not strong or needs improvement. For example, how you speak in a boardroom, how you influence stakeholders, and your gravitas, how you keep your composure in tough situations etc.

While executive coaching is more focused on overall leadership goals, executive presence coaching is more focused on building a powerful executive presence.

7. How should I choose the right executive coach?

The right coach would be a person with whom you are able to form a rapport, with whom you feel compatible. The comfort zone thus created will allow you to open up and share with ease.

Your coach should be someone who would spark your potential by positively challenging you while giving you the ease to be honest by not judging you.

Your coach must have the relevant experience and credibility. You must definitely feel that your coach understands you and thus you are able to trust him/her completely.

When evaluating executive coaches, look for someone who has prior experience in coaching CXOs, who understands the senior leadership dynamics

8. How is success in coaching measured?
In Coaching, success is often measured by how your stakeholders experience you differently.
We may use various methods to track this progress. It could be the proactive feedback and compliments that you received from others. It could also be a change in results in the psychometric tests.
Very often, it’s the small shifts that speak volumes — how calmly you handle a tough conversation, how comfortable you were in making a tough choice or decision, or how others begin to seek your advice or mentorship more often.
In essence, success in coaching is measured by the accomplishment of the parameters that you set for your success before the coaching journey.
9. What are some common challenges leaders face during coaching?

Real change takes courage. Some leaders initially are apprehensive about being vulnerable or reflecting on their long-held beliefs that are not serving them. Some leaders find it difficult to sustain newly formed habits due to busy schedules.
The good news is — once awareness deepens, change follows naturally. The key is consistent actions between sessions.
A skilled executive coach prepared a good ground for trust to nurture, and where the leader can easily share their challenges without being evaluated.

10. How is confidentiality managed executive coaching?

In executive coaching, confidentiality is non-negotiable and acts as a foundation to build trust between the coach and the leader

If your organization sponsors the coaching, I keep sponsors informed of progress only at a top level — primarily to understand what changes or transformations they are observing.
I never discuss the details of our discussions.

In self-sponsored coaching, confidentiality is absolutely 100% maintained — as it is in all my coaching relationships.

Whether the coaching is organization-sponsored or self-sponsored, you can be assured that everything shared remains strictly confidential
