29 Apr Rethinking Executive Presence: It Starts from the Inside Out
When we think of executive presence, what often comes to mind is the way a leader carries themselves—how confidently they walk into a room, how well they speak, the gravitas in their voice, or how sharply they are dressed.
While these external markers do play a role, they are merely the surface. True executive presence isn’t about image management—it’s about inner alignment.
At the foundation of a powerful executive presence lies something far more significant: mental fitness.

The Three Pillars of Executive Presence
Over the years, I’ve found it helpful to simplify executive presence into three essential pillars:
1. Skill Set
This includes how you communicate, how you show up physically, your body language, vocal tone, and your ability to influence through presence and clarity. It’s what most people notice first—but it’s also the most superficial layer.
2. Mindset
This is deeper. It’s your internal belief system. What do you believe about yourself? Do you carry self-doubt or inner judgment? Do you constantly feel the need to prove your worth? Your mindset influences how you interpret feedback, handle setbacks, and perceive your own power.
3. Being
This is the deepest layer. It’s not just what you do or what you think, but who you are. Your identity. Your inner state of being. When a leader operates from a grounded sense of who they are, it reflects in every room they walk into—even before they speak a word.
And this is where mental fitness plays a transformative role. It strengthens both your mindset and your being—ensuring that your skill set isn’t just polished, but powerfully rooted.

What Is Mental Fitness?
As defined by Shirzad Chamine, founder of Positive Intelligence®, mental fitness is your capacity to respond to life’s challenges with a positive rather than a negative mindset. In simpler terms, it’s your ability to remain grounded, focused, and constructive, even when things don’t go your way.
Mental fitness is about learning to respond—not react. It’s about showing up with clarity when others are overwhelmed, and staying resourceful and empathetic under pressure. For leaders operating in high-stakes, high-visibility roles, this ability can make the difference between being heard—and being remembered.

Executive Presence Is an Inside-Out Game
My own realization that executive presence is more about what’s happening within a leader than what’s visible outside came through years of coaching senior leaders.
Yes, some people may initially be perceived as confident because of their attire, posture, or communication style. But in every coaching engagement, it quickly becomes clear that these external cues only carry so much weight.
What truly shifts perception—and drives long-term credibility and influence—is the internal clarity and presence with which a leader operates. When the inner reality changes, the outer reality transforms effortlessly.

The Hidden Barrier: When Strengths Become Saboteurs
Here’s the paradox: many leaders are unconsciously sabotaging their own executive presence—through the very traits they consider their greatest strengths.
Take for example a senior executive I once coached. He prided himself on being extremely detail-oriented—a classic perfectionist and stickler for rules. He would “dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s,” always striving for flawless outcomes.
On paper, this was a strength. But in practice, it became a mental and emotional burden. He constantly worried about missing deadlines, second-guessed his decisions, and stressed over whether he was coming across as competent enough.
The result? His team operated under pressure, morale was low, and he struggled with building influence at higher levels.
When we worked together using the Positive Intelligence® framework, he came to recognize this pattern as one of his top Saboteurs—in this case, the Stickler. He wasn’t lacking capability. He was lacking mental fitness—the ability to regulate and reframe his inner dialogue.
Through the PQ Bootcamp and our one-on-one sessions, he began to shift. He still held high standards, but he stopped allowing those standards to control him. The strength remained—but the sabotage stopped.

Strengthening Executive Presence Through Deep Coaching and Mental Fitness
Many leaders I coach arrive with a very common starting point: they’ve received feedback that they lack executive presence. Their first instinct? Fix the externals—dress better, speak more powerfully, use stronger body language.
But what I help them see is this: If you don’t shift the mindset and being behind your behavior, your executive presence won’t be sustainable.
That’s why I’ve integrated the Positive Intelligence® (PQ) framework into my coaching practice. In every engagement, we go beyond surface-level change. We work at the root.
Over a 10 to 12 session, one-on-one format spread across six months, we explore:
• The real leadership challenges they are navigating
• The belief systems that shape their behavior
• Their core values and life purpose
• The internal blocks and derailers that limit their influence
• What executive presence looks like for them, not just in theory
We don’t offer templated solutions. We co-create strategies—tailored approaches that align with their personality, context, and aspirations. Each session builds reflection, insight, and momentum.
Somewhere between the second and third month of this journey, leaders also go through a 7-week Positive Intelligence® Bootcamp. This group coaching experience consists of weekly sessions where they actively work on:
• Identifying and weakening their Saboteurs—the inner critics that sabotage performance and well-being
• Strengthening their Sage perspective—the calm, creative, compassionate self that drives wise leadership
The PQ Bootcamp acts as a catalyst, accelerating their inner transformation and anchoring their executive presence in deep self-awareness.

The Three-Fold Impact of this coaching journey
When leaders build mental fitness, three areas begin to elevate consistently:
1. Performance
They no longer get trapped in overthinking, self-doubt, or people-pleasing. With a clearer mind, they make faster and better decisions.
2. Relationships
They become more empathetic, less reactive, and more authentic in their communication—building trust across all levels.
3. Well-being
With reduced internal conflict and a calmer mindset, stress levels drop. They operate from purpose, not pressure.

Are You Ready to Go Inside-Out?
You may already be competent. You may already be working hard. But if your mind is cluttered with inner criticism, perfectionism, or control—your executive presence will always remain limited.
To begin this journey of insight, I invite you to take the Saboteur Assessment—a free and research-backed tool that reveals which inner voices may be sabotaging your performance and presence.

It takes just 5–10 minutes—but what it reveals could shift the way you lead forever.

Final Thoughts
Executive presence isn’t a performance. It’s a reflection of your internal clarity, strength, and identity.
When you master your skill set, elevate your mindset, and anchor your being, you don’t just show up—you lead with presence.
